(1) Patison is a known ‘death’ bowler so why open with him & concede 15+ runs per over? Phehlukwayo is a much better & acknowledged opener! Ultimately the roughly 20 extra runs cost us the game at Wanderers
(2) Add insult to injury: eventually Patison bowls 4 overs & Phehlukwayo 2!
(3) Add MORE insult to injury: Patison comes out to bat – Phehlukwayo is known for his big hitting, a much better batsman & may still save the game BUT what does Patison do? Rather than taking the single & rotating the strike, he goes for a (insane) 2nd run & is run out! Questions: was there no discussion of strategy in the change room before Patison walked out or with Phehlukwayo when he arrived at the crease?
(4) Finally: sixes vs four: The former is sexy & ‘Yes’ we needed them but they are much harder to hit & is not a % shot – you can achieve the same with 3 or 2 fours + singles, even thought it takes more finesse & skill to read the field & place your shots. Add 4 singles/twos & then 2×4 + 4 = 12 … & no one is out! This is exactly what Behardien &Hendricks were busy doing – with great success!
